Text expander vs clipboard manager: which do you need?
“Text expander” and “clipboard manager” get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. Here’s the distinction — and why you might want both.
Text expander
A text expander inserts predefined content on demand: canned responses, addresses, signatures, boilerplate. You curate a library up front and reach for it deliberately. It’s about reusing things you already wrote.
Clipboard manager
A clipboard manager keeps a history of what you copy so you can get back items you’d otherwise lose. It’s reactive — capturing as you work — and about not losing things you just grabbed.
Which do you need?
- Reuse the same phrases, replies, or details often? You want a text expander.
- Copy lots of things and wish iOS remembered more than the last one? You want a clipboard manager.
- Both? Most people are in this camp.
